Ghent University (UGent) is currently carrying out research to protect the famous Fort Boyard from the impact of sea currents.
The alarm was sounded several years ago. The historic building, which serves as the setting for the famous television show, is falling into disrepair. Built in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between the island of Aix and the island of Oléron in the 19th centuryethe fort finds itself increasingly threatened by climatic hazards. To try to save it, major works are planned. The project is expected to last four years and the renovation costs amount to several tens of millions of euros.
Fort Boyard requires a lot of maintenance, it has seriously deteriorated over the years. However, the situation would have been worse without the success of the show, which the new Belgian version will be broadcast on Tipik from this Sunday, December 15 at 8:30 p.m. then at any time on Auvio. The game show contributed greatly to its preservation. The region spends each year several hundred thousand euros to ensure the sustainability of its great tourist attraction, damaged by swell and occasional storms.
However, the degradation continues to worsen due to climate change. The work will focus on the construction of a new protective spur against swell and sea currents, a docking harbor and protection blocks to counter erosion.
According to the VRT, the University of Ghent (UGent) will participate in this major project. Scientists have just started a study on the impact of waves. To do this, they modeled the fort using a 3D printer. This model of the fort measures approximately 2 meters and is placed in a 900 square meter pool, in which waves imitate real conditions.
