Tom Waes back home after serious crash: no programs with him on VRT for the time being, but “certainly in the future” (Antwerp)

On the night of Friday, November 29 to Saturday, November 30, Tom Waes drove onto the Antwerp Ring Road around 1 am in the direction of Linkeroever, where he lives. However, just before the Kennedy tunnel he crashed into a crash absorber. He was seriously injured and taken to hospital, where he spent some time in the intensive care unit.

Three days after the accident, Tom Waes sent out a personal statement in which he confirmed the suspicions that he had had too much to drink when he got behind the wheel. “It is a big, incomprehensible mistake, which makes me feel terrible,” said the maker. “I would like to offer my sincere apologies to everyone. I’m terribly sorry.”

Waes thanked the nursing staff who cared for him and expressed his confidence in the judicial investigation. He concluded by saying that he will not talk to the press in the coming months.

Still on VRT

Tom Waes will focus on his recovery in the near future. As a result, it will not be visible on the screen in the short term, the VRT confirms. But Waes still has a future at the VRT. Liesbet Vrieleman, interim Content Director of the public broadcaster, said this on Wednesday morning.

At the start of the press conference about the spring of the VRT, Vrieleman first wanted to make some things clear about Tom Waes’ situation. “What happened is not okay,” Vrieleman emphasized. “But we are happy that Tom is physically improving. His recovery will take time. We will take our time and discuss the next steps with him later.”

The VRT will later discuss with Waes and his entourage how both parties can continue to work in the future. “There will be no programs with Tom on VRT for the time being, but there will certainly be in the future. The focus now is on his recovery, physically but certainly also mentally,” said Vrieleman.
