Chandigarh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave warning for Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana, valid from December 10 to December 14. The warning, accompanied by a yellow alert, comes as the temperatures in the region drop significantly. On the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, the minimum temperature fell to 6.4 degrees Celsius—4.1 degrees below normal.
Meteorologists predict further declines in temperatures, with both nighttime lows and daytime highs expected to decrease over the coming days. A senior IMD official attributed the cold wave to snowfall in higher altitudes brought on by a western disturbance.
Cold wave conditions are defined by minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, with deviations of 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal. The cold wave is expected to persist, following unusually warm days earlier this December.
Recent data shows a sharp dip in temperatures. Maximum temperatures dropped from 28 degrees Celsius on December 3 to 21.6 degrees Celsius on December 11.
