The list of injuries afflicting the Real Madrid team this season is longer than the number of games played by Ancelotti’s men. It has become rare in recent months for a game to not end with another player heading to the treatment room. The games against Getafe and Athletic provided a brief respite after an eight-match streak that left a total of twelve casualties in its wake. However, the recent bad luck has returned: the trip to Girona resulted in a quadriceps injury for Mendy, while Mbappé returned from Bergamo with discomfort in his lower left thigh, pending further tests scheduled for Thursday. In total, there have been 27 injuries of varying severity that have affected the first team, and yet Madrid continue to overcome these setbacks time and time again, as they remain firmly in the fight for the La Liga title, still alive in the Champions League and looks towards the Intercontinental Cup, which could provide the second trophy in a season full of challenges and numerous injuries.

Madrid averages more than one injury per game. The game against Atalanta was the 23rd of the Ancelotti era this season, and his players have experienced 27 absences due to injuries, whether traumatic, muscular or just minor discomfort. Also worth noting is that Alaba began the season dealing with a torn ACL from last year, and two academy graduates who traveled for the US tour, Palacios and Joan Martínez, also suffered injuries before the competition began: the first during the trip and the second just a few days after his return. Notably, we have also excluded a common illness: the gastroenteritis that sidelined Lunin in October, preventing him from joining his national team during the second international break.

The illness suffered by the Ukrainian did not prevent him from participating in any match with Madrid. He is one of the few players who can claim to be available for Ancelotti at all times. They can be counted almost on one hand: Fran García, Rüdiger, Valverde, Modric, Güler, Endrick and Lunin are the seven members of the first team who have not yet gone through the treatment room.
The longest absences belong to those injured players who have been absent for an extended period. Alaba is close to his return just as the first anniversary of his injury approaches, having missed all 23 games. Carvajal has been absent for eleven games (he previously missed another due to a knock), while Militao has now been unavailable for six. Apart from these, only three other injuries have resulted in absences of more than a month for their victims: Camavinga was out for a month and a half (nine games) due to a sprained ankle suffered on the eve of the Super Cup; Brahim missed 39 days (eight games) due to an injury to the adductor longus in his left leg; and Ceballos was absent for 32 days (six games) due to a sprained right ankle.

Despite the congested schedule, no other player has yet suffered five consecutive absences; although in some cases, such as that of Courtois, it has been due to a succession of international breaks that interrupted the competition in this first third of the season. In total, the fifteen injured players have accumulated a total of 94 lost games.
At this point last season, Madrid had already suffered 19 injuries, eight less than the current count. However, those injuries were more long-term. In addition to Courtois and Militao’s cruciate ligament tears, there were eight other injuries that required more than 30 days of recovery.
