Will Louis Boyard succeed Philippe Gaudin, the very controversial mayor of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges? Re-elected deputy for the 3rd constituency of Val-de- in July 2024, the deputy would have other ambitions. “In view of the by-elections which should be organized on January 26 and February 2 I am running for mayor of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges,” he declared. Dates which will be made official only after having been voted on in the Council of Ministers.

For several months, the city has been experiencing political crisis which came to light last April when Mayor DVD Philippe Gaudin performed a Nazi salute in full municipal council.

After a series of resignations of municipal councilors, the law leaves no choice: an early municipal election must be organized in this Parisian suburb of 35,000 inhabitants, the poorest in the department.

“It is above all the youngest in Val-de-Marne,” explains Louis Boyard, himself aged 24. “It is a city which has been abandoned by the policies of Emmanuel Macron and where the inhabitants suffer from many problemslike inflation”, he explains, specifying that he wants to work on “access to education, employment and housing” for the inhabitants of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, whose “heritage” he recalls worker “.

For La insoumise, this municipal election one year away will be a test. For 2026, the radical left movement, which has very few local elected officials, is seeking to conquer town halls, relying in particular on its main strengths: youth and working-class neighborhoods.

“I want to show France what a rebellious city is,” declares the former high school union leader who, if elected, should leave his position as deputy. During the last legislative elections, Mr. Boyard was elected in the second round in the 3rd constituency of Val-de-Marne with 46.9% of the votes.

In the city of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges alone, 61.2% of voters voted for him . As is often the case with the Insoumis, the main challenge will therefore be to mobilize abstainers.

“If there is a low participation rate, victory is not certain,” explains Mr. Boyard, who specifies that he wants run the city with “young Villeneuvoisqualified for management.

What will happen to relations with other local left-wing forces, while nationally the Insoumis sharply criticize the other forces of the New Popular Front (NFP) for seeking to build compromises with the Macronists? A local communist leader, Daniel Henryindicated that he was presenting “a left-wing, environmentalist and civic list”.
