Kurdish militias in Syria said they see an opportunity for a new political beginning, after the departure of President Bashar al-Assad.
Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said, “This change provides an opportunity to build a new Syria based on democracy and justice.”
Abdi added that this could “guarantee the rights of all Syrians.”
The SDF commander highlighted that, “In Syria, we are living historic moments as we witness the fall of the authoritarian regime in Damascus.”
It is worth noting that the Syrian Democratic Forces, led by Kurdish militias, recently took control of areas in northeastern Syria, constituting about 30 percent of the country.
The SDF is the most powerful armed group in the autonomous Kurdish regions. The Syrian Democratic Forces were also an important partner of the American coalition in the war against the terrorist “Islamic State” organization.
