There were zero away wins at Borussia Dortmund, but at Gladbach – BVB it should finally work. But right from the start of the game, the Black and Yellows had to push hard.
Within just a minute there were two really tricky scenes between Gladbach and BVB. Both times Dortmund were able to thank the referee for not having a penalty whistled against them.
Gladbach – BVB: Double penalty shout from the Foals
13 minutes had been played on the Lower Rhine when the first outcry echoed through Borussia Park. Ex-Gladbach player Ramy Bensebaini, of all people, stepped heavily on Kevin Stöger's foot off the ball. One could not accuse the Algerian of intention. Nevertheless, the scene caused a stir because it took place in the penalty area and could have given a penalty. Or even have to?

A brief VAR check was carried out, but the game continued. No penalty for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Then the next outcry. At the following corner, a shot from Rocco Reitz landed on the hand of Serhou Guirassy. Here, too, there was no intention. But the star striker deflected the ball, which would have gone into or into the goal, out of the goal.
“Gladbach cheated out of two penalties!”
This time video referee Tobias Reichel checked longer. But the decision was the same: no penalty. VfL didn't even get the corner. The Dortmund fans took a deep breath. The Black and Yellows were unanimous in the net: the home team should have taken at least one of the two penalties. They were served accordingly and made strong accusations against VAR Reichel and referee Tobias Stieler, who had not watched both scenes again:
- “Gladbach cheated out of two penalties!”
- “The fact that the scene(s) are not at least watched again is a scandal!”
- “Two of the worst decisions in a row this season. You have to do that first.”
- “Gladbach has to get two penalties in a minute and doesn’t get one.”
- “How can this not be a 911?”
- “In what world is that not a handball penalty? The ball would have gone INTO the goal.”
More news:
Lucky for BVB, bad luck for Gladbach. The DFB later explained: Bensebaini's alleged foul was considered an “accident”, and there was no penalty for Guirassy's handball because there was no tension in the arm.
