President Joe Biden skipped the Notre Dame re-opening in Paris on Saturday. Instead, First Lady Jill Biden and his daughter Ashley attended the event. The former will also meet with Prince William, who she last saw at the coronation of his father King Charles III in London last year. President-elect Donald Trump and his billionaire backer Elon Musk were also at the re-opening.
Trump sat next to Jill and Ashley Biden at the event. The Republican, earlier in the day, met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Before meeting Macron privately, Trump told reporters: “We had a great relationship, as everyone knows. We’ve accomplished a lot together. And the people of France are spectacular. I guess it’s one of our largest groups in the United States, French people. And we respect them and we love them. Very talented people, extremely energetic people, as you know very well.”
However, President Biden’s absence raised several questions. The Democrat is not attending the Notre Dame Cathedral reopening in Paris as his wife is representing the administration at the event. She has been on an international trip, focusing on initiatives like the Biden Cancer Moonshot, women’s health research, and education collaborations, with stops in Abu Dhabi and Doha prior to Paris.
Other leaders at the event were:
– Britain’s Prince William
– Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
-– European Central Bank Chief Christine Lagarde
– Bernard Arnault (LVMH CEO and major contributor to the restoration effort)
– Salma Hayek (Actor) and Francois-Henri Pinault (French businessman, her husband)
– Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo
– Former French Presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy
– Former US Secretary of State John Kerry
– Michel Barnier (Outgoing French Prime Minister, recently ousted)
