100 helping hands for the Animal Academy near Los Alares on Fuerteventura

On November 27, 2024, it was that time again: the employees of the Puerto del Rosario-based company ValueNet came to their annual activity day. Once a year, the company gives its predominantly German-speaking employees paid time off to do good in social institutions on Fuerteventura. This year the choice fell on the Animal Academy near Los Alares.

The Animal Academy is a refuge for mistreated and abandoned farm animals on Fuerteventura. Here, volunteers put their heart and soul into giving these animals a second chance, becoming real superheroes for creatures that were inflicted with a lot of suffering by their previous owners.

Many of the animals rescued suffer from developmental disabilities, psychological trauma or physical problems. However, in this special shelter they find a home where they can live without fear.

The facility is financed exclusively through donations, and a small, dedicated team of volunteers ensures that the animals are well looked after and can regain their trust.

After a short introduction by Francisco, the head of the Animal Academy, the 50 helpers set off. Francisco first shared moving stories of the animals that have found a new home at the Animal Academy before work began on the extensive grounds.

The tasks primarily included cleaning the areas of stones and animal “leftovers”. Surrounded by pigs, donkeys, goats, chickens, ducks, horses and the cow Samantha, everyone got started highly motivated. The first successes were visible after just a few hours.

Of course, there was also plenty of petting for the animals. Particularly touching: An employee became so fond of a little pig that she spontaneously sponsored the animal.

At the end of the busy day, everyone, exhausted but satisfied, enjoyed a meal together – with the good feeling of having helped the Animal Academy and the animals. In addition, ValueNet presented a donation check for 1,500 euros, which will be used for urgently needed purchases such as wheelbarrows, paint or building materials.

Another contribution to support was the Animal Academy's small shop: Many helpers stocked up on T-shirts and hoodies there – the proceeds also go directly to the animals.

A day full of commitment, compassion and success – for the Animal Academy animals and the dedicated helpers alike!
