KRC Genk won 3-1 against KV Kortrijk on Saturday afternoon. After conceding an early goal, the Limburgers completely turned the lopsided situation around. Hrosovsky scored two goals and is clearly in his best form. Adedeji-Sternberg immediately scored with his first starting spot.
KRC Genk looked KV Kortrijk in the eye on Saturday afternoon. At the Kerels, Dion De Neve was replaced by Gilles Dewaele. Thorsten Fink surprised with Adedeji-Sternberg in the starting line-up and no Kayembe. Cuesta took his place.
The home team clearly did not seem to be fully awake yet. After just four minutes of play, Gilles Dewaele was able to head the ball past Hendrik Van Crombrugge after a corner kick. Kortrijk simply started the match better than Genk.
There was a first moment of discussion around minute 20. Cuesta takes down Ferri, who was through with Smets next to him. The ref gave a yellow card and the VAR decided not to intervene. Not much later, they called for a penalty at Genk after Tolu was held with two hands in the visitors’ penalty area and went down. Here too, the VAR decided not to intervene after the ref did not put the ball on the spot.
Fink decided to intervene about five minutes before halftime by bringing Cuesta on for Kayembe. Less than two minutes later it was Patrik Hrosovsky who was able to hang the signs immediately. He is clearly in a good flow: the midfielder also scored the 2-1 against Standard this week deep in extra time.
And whether he is in top form. Immediately after the break, Hrosovsky was able to score his second of the afternoon, after a poor clearance from Joao Silva. Genk started the second half a lot better than Kortrijk, and the home team was able to take more control of the match. KV Kortrijk was able to counter-attack regularly, but Genk did better in minute 68.
Tolu gave in a wonderful way with Adedeji-Sternberg who came face to face with Vandenberghe and neatly put the ball past the KVK goalkeeper. He will immediately thank coach Fink in the best way for his first starting spot.
The visitors continued to look for a second goal, which eventually came. In extra time, Ambrose headed past Van Crombrugge after a cross from Alebiosu. 3-2 ultimately remained the final score.
With this victory, Genk extends its lead (for the time being) by 7 points. The Limburgers are now the leader with 38 points. KV Kortrijk remains in the danger zone in 14th place with 17 points.
