It is a unique vehicle manufactured by hand on the basis of the new electric G-Class and has already been personally delivered to Pope Francis in the Vatican. He recently took the electric G-Class for a spin and found that the electric Jeep lives up to its 473 km range with a 116 kWh battery, however the €142,621 price tag will likely keep most customers away.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the Vatican has undertaken electrification efforts: As in early 2015, the Pope rode around in a hybrid vehicle, and in 2021, Fisker was in talks for a new “popemobile.” Fisker’s plans also likely perished along with his eventual insolvency this year, however, delaying the Pope’s first electric car until 2024. In 2020, the Vatican also got underway electrifying its fleet.
“With the new Popemobile, Pope Francis is the first pontiff to travel in a fully electric Mercedes-Benz when making public appearances. This is a special honor for our company, and I would like to thank His Holiness for his trust,” said Ola Källenius at the handover, adding: “With this Popemobile, we also make a clear call for electromobility and decarbonization. Mercedes-Benz not only represents the special and the individual, but also the consistent creation of the conditions for a carbon-neutral new vehicle fleet in 2039.”
