What to watch this weekend.

A group of kids lost in space trying to evade pirates. A sexy British spy drama. An adult animated series about a team of super-monsters designed to introduce us to the new DC cinematic universe. There are plenty of awesome new shows and to keep you busy on this first weekend of December. (Second if you count last Sunday, but that was still a November weekend also).

Each week I scour the internet for the best—and sometimes worst—shows and movies to stream on all our myriad streaming services. Sometimes I warn you away from the really bad stuff (sorry Fear The Walking Dead, True Detective: Night Country, The Acolyte and The Rings Of Power, you’re just bad !) but mostly I offer up suggestions on what to watch, or at least what looks good if I haven’t watched it yet myself.

You can check out last weekend’s streaming guide right here.

ForbesWhat To Watch This Weekend: New Streaming Shows And Movies On Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV And More

This weekend, I’m going to mostly focus on the new stuff but after that I’ll have some suggestions of currently streaming shows as well, though most of what I’m covering weekly is over now. There are still a few shows I’m writing about or, more likely, behind on!

What’s New The Weekend Of December 6th

Black Doves (Netflix)

I started watching Black Doves on Netflix because even though it really hadn’t been on my radar, the cast was pretty stellar. Keira Knightley has always been beautiful and I’ve always liked her, but it’s Sarah Lancashire that drew my attention. Lancashire’s performance as Catherine Cawood in that police drama may be the finest TV performance of the 21st century, and I’m not exaggerating. In any case, I started this one last night and it was quite good so far—a fun spy series with some action and humor and all the rest—but I was super exhausted and so I didn’t get far. I’ll be tuning back in this weekend and will report back.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (Disney+)

The first two episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew were decent, if a bit slow to get to the good stuff. Still, a Star Wars show aimed at kids with tons and tons of little nods to Amblin Entertainment films like E.T. and The Goonies is a fun idea and this show has a lot of potential to be, well, fun. I’m cautiously optimistic. New episodes land on Tuesdays.

Creature Commandos (Max)

Amanda Waller isn’t allowed to use human superheroes anymore. Superheroes isn’t the right word. B-list supervillains? Antiheroes? Whatever the whole Suicide Squad / Team Peacemaker is considered, Waller is paying for her negligence and now she has to employ only monsters and other non-human creatures to do her dirty work. Enter the Creature Commandos, based on the DC Comics of the same name. This is an “edgy” adult-oriented animated show and it’s scoring high with critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and fans (79%). I haven’t started it yet but it looks fun.

The Sticky (Prime Video)

Margo Martindale (Justified) stars in this heist series based on the very true story of The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. What’s funny about this is that years ago when I first read about the maple syrup laws in Canada—and the cartels that controlled maple syrup production—I thought it would make for a great film or TV series. Well, ask and ye shall receive. This is just short six episodes, but should make for a fun twist on your typical caper story. Breaking Maple, or something.

Fly Me To The Moon (Apple TV)

Scarlett Johansson stars across from Channing Tatum in this new Apple TV rom-com. The title of the film is clever. It’s obviously a Frank Sinatra song, but the movie takes place during the Apollo 11 moon landing so it functions on multiple levels. Seeing Johansson like this brings me right back to her role in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. She really pulls off the 1960s look incredibly well. Maybe we should just bring that look back.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (Max)

This Saturday, the new Christopher Reeve documentary lands on Max. The tragic story of the Superman actor looks like quite a watch, boasting a 98% with both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film lands on Max not long before James Gunn’s new Superman film is set to hit theaters in July of 2025. I’m terribly, terribly afraid of paralyzation so I’m not sure if I’ll be watching this one, but it certainly looks like a fascinating documentary.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Max)

I still haven’t seen Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and I have a confession: I’m just not a big fan of the original movie. I didn’t think it was that funny or that scary, and while I like the cast I just don’t like them that much in this film. Still, the sequel is now out on Max to stream with your subscription, so that’s fun. For people who like these movies.

Rivals (Netflix)

I’m including Rivals even though it’s been out on Hulu/Disney+ for several weeks now. Somehow, I totally missed this one despite its amazing cast. Well, I started watching it this past week and I’m absolutely hooked! This is one of the best shows of the year, and certainly one of the steamiest. They really don’t make enough sexy shows these days, and Rivals is here to remind us why that’s such a shame. The story takes place in the 1980s in the posh English countryside and deals with landed elite, scrappy TV personalities and forbidden romance. Good stuff! I also think that Bella Maclean and Nafessa Williams are two of the most beautiful women on television at the moment, so there’s that. (And for those more inclined to ogle men, Alex Hassell and Aidan Turner aren’t half bad, either).

Currently Streaming

I’m not watching all of these, and I’m certainly not caught up with all of them, but these are the shows on my radar at the moment. If I’ve missed anything, please do let me know.

Outlander Season 7, Part 2 (Starz)

Claire and Jaime returned to Scotland at the beginning of this half-season, which I was very much looking forward to. However, the journey was brief and after Claire almost immediately sailed back to America, tragedy befell our heroes—though it’s the type of tragedy we, the viewers, know is only temporary. So far, I’m enjoying the back half of Season 7, even though I’m reminded that some of the melodrama makes me roll my eyes at times. New episodes land Fridays on Starz.

Silo Season 2 (Apple TV)

I’m still catching up on Season 2 of Silo, and while it’s pretty good so far I’m definitely a little nervous about the pacing and where this is all headed. Still, great dystopian science-fiction and well worth your time. New episodes drop Fridays.

Shrinking (Apple TV)

I love this show even though sometimes I feel like it’s too much a mirror. I am too much Jimmy and my relationship with my daughter is too much like Jimmy’s with his daughter, Alice. I just need Harrison Ford in my life and then I can go Jimmying with a mentor to yell at me from time to time. Seriously, though, this is one of the best dramedies out there and another win for Bill Lawrence, who also co-created Ted Lasso and Bad Monkey. New episodes drop Tuesdays.

Dune: Prophecy (HBO / MAX)

Dune: Prophecy looks good, sounds good, the actors are mostly very talented, the writing seems decent, but I’m just so terribly bored. I find the whole thing utterly dull at this point, and I’m all caught up now. The flashback episode was far, far more information about the Harkonnen sisters than we needed. The fact that the Harkonnen/Atreides feud has been going on for 10,000 years strikes me as fundamentally goofy. The whole thing is falling into the prequel trap and I’m not sure what they can do to get me to care. New episodes land Sundays.

Other ongoing shows include Day Of The Jackal, which I still haven’t started, The Agency, another spy show that I did start but which I found quite boring and haven’t gotten back to, as well as Taylor Sheridan’s various series: Landman (which I like so far); Lioness and Yellowstone. So much to watch, so little time.
