On December 6, the European Commission officially concluded negotiations for the Mercosur free trade agreement supposed to link the European Union and five Latin American countries. Its ratification can still be blocked provided that four countries representing 35% of the European population oppose it. While Italy has expressed its refusal of the text “as it stands”, will the “no” vote prevail? In any case, the peninsula finds itself in a decisive position.

This is a new step for the ratification of Mercosur. This December 6, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, officially concluded the negotiations of the free trade agreement supposed to link the Old Continent and Latin America, during the summit in Montevideo (Uruguay). Resolutely against, is mobilizing to rally at least three States to its side, bringing together 35% of the European population, condition sine qua non to block the treaty. Poland, and more recently Italy, have expressed their refusal of the text “as it stands”. The latter, comprising 13% of the European population, would represent a significant burden. The choice of Italy is in any case closely scrutinized and is also fraught with challenges for its national policy.
