Change of method. After the censorship vote on Wednesday, December 4 by the New Popular Front and the National Rally, which overthrew the government of Michel Barnier, part of the left says it is ready for a non-censorship agreement with the forces of the former -majority. The Socialists are also invited to the Élysée on Friday December 6. Texts, phone calls, meetings between two doors in the corridors of the National Assembly, many chat. According to information from franceinfo, Marc Fesneau, at the head of the centrist deputies, has been talking with his socialist counterpart Boris Vallaud, but also with the Greens and the Communists, since the night of the censorship.
At the heart of the discussions, the idea of a non-censorship agreement, that is to say compromises between deputies to prevent the next Prime Minister from being overthrown, and finally to emerge from the crisis. “They sniff each other, explains a centrist strategist, with the objective of successfully navigating for a few months, and getting out of the Le Pen-Mélenchon vise.” Among the points of agreement: proportional. There is even, we are told, a possible path to pension reform: no repeal, but why not another version according to a MoDem deputy. There are obviously red lines for everyone. The left no longer wants 49.3 and an immigration law.
These discussions can suit two men whose names are circulating for Matignon, the boss of MoDem François Bayrou, the option is rising, and the socialist Bernard Cazeneuve. The President of the Republic is calling for a Prime Minister capable of building a majority, if one or the other arrives with an agreement, it is a big plus. Bernard Cazeneuve also meets many parliamentarians. Just two weeks ago, a drink with deputies from all sides, MoDem, PS, also right, took place at the Palais-Bourbon. Coincidence of the calendar: he and François Bayrou found themselves on Thursday, December 5, side by side on stage at a conference, after a one-on-one interview a little earlier.
The left continues to plead for a left-wing Prime Minister, and some, like PS boss Olivier Faure, still reject the name of Bernard Cazeneuve. But other socialists continue to defend his name, and the former Prime Minister has many friends in the MoDem, just like François Bayrou in the PS. A cowardly socialist framework even at franceinfo: “I would prefer a socialist. Then, I would prefer François Bayrou to Bruno Retailleau. We will do with what we have.”
For its part, LFI refuses any compromise with the Macronists and continues to call for the resignation of Emmanuel Macron. By speaking with the ex-majority, the PS, the ecologists and the communists sideline the rebels. This is a golden opportunity for them to cut the cord. Stability in the Assembly would eliminate the risk of dissolution, so no need to form an alliance with Jean-Luc Mélenchon to save their constituencies.
