A powerful magnitude 7 earthquake struck this Thursday, December 5, 2024 near the coast of northern California, announced the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS), triggering a tsunami alert.
The earthquake struck around 6:44 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers near the small town of Eureka, according to the USGS. The tsunami warning concerns a large part of the Pacific coast north of San Francisco.
A risk incurred
“Based on the preliminary parameters of the earthquake (…) dangerous tsunamis are possible for the coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter of the earthquake,” announced the American authorities.
They said no areas had yet been hit by a tsunami, but anyone near the coast should be aware of the risk.
According to the Los Angeles Timesthe tsunami warning extends from Oregon to north of Santa Cruz. “Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant flooding is expected or is occurring. Warnings indicate that dangerous and widespread coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrives,” authorities said in a bulletin.
