Polar air from Greenland is about to invade the country. It will have the effect of causing temperatures to drop significantly. For how long? What expected values? We take stock of this expected winter period.
The forecast is becoming more refined, the cold is being confirmed! While meteorological winter officially began last Sunday, December 1st, nowa winter period will open from this weekend and especially next week. Indeed, a powerful anticyclone will set up over the Atlantic, stretching towards the pole.
Very cold air coming from Greenland and joined by that present in Scandinavia will thus flow towards Western Europe and therefore France. Temperatures will therefore drop this weekend, initially returning to seasonal levels.. The cold will then get worse next week.
Up to 10°C cooler between Friday and Sunday
With the return of Atlantic disturbances and rain this weekend, a mild spell is observed. Thus, on this Friday, the maximums are most often between 10 and 20°C, from north to south. After the passage of a new active front during the day on Saturday, the flow will turn to the northwest sector and the mercury will begin to fall.
It will continue on Sunday with maximums which will no longer exceed 3 to 9°C at the best of the afternoon in most areas. Thus, Toulouse will see the thermometer drop from 15 to 7°C between Friday and Sunday. The fall will be even heavier in Tulle, from 13 to 3°C in just 48 hours.
Throughout the weekend, the wind is expected to be very present, which will prevent the real cold from setting in.. So, frosts will be rare when you wake up. Some slightly negative values will be possible on Sunday morning but only on the first heights of the eastern reliefs, the Massif Central and the Pyrenees.
Generalization and intensification of frosts next week
With less humidity next week thanks to the orientation of the flow to the northeast sector (less maritime, more continental) and with a significantly weaker wind, the drop in mercury will continue very gradually. If frosts will remain rare Monday morning, the maximum ones will have more and more difficulty gaining degreesmost often settling at 2 to 7°C under cover, from east to west.
On Tuesday, negative values (between -2 and 0°C) will start to multiply in the east as well as from Normandy to Hauts-de-France. During the day, the thermometers will lose another one or two degrees compared to the day before, being between 2 and 5°C below the so-called seasonal values.
Frosts will become almost widespread Wednesday morning with regularly -1, -2 or -3°C under shelter. In the east, values will sometimes be lower while -10°C will multiply in the mountains. The situation will be identical on Thursday in the north and east while a mild spell will begin in the southwest. It will continue on Friday, so that the risk of frost should disappear by the following weekend. It will then (already) be the end of this winter periode…
