With the Naudet brothers, the event “as if we were there”
Five years after the fire, it is time for reconstruction. But how can we forget this dramatic night of April 15 to 16, 2019? Jules and Gédéon Naudet offer a “catch-up session”. A true-false live action smoothly directed by the two brothers, authors of noted films on the attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York – where they were then for a documentary on life in a fire station in Manhattan (9/11New York September 11two Emmy Awards in 2002) – and on those of November 13, 2015 in Paris (November 13 It floats and does not sinkNetflix, 2018).

-To bring the crazy night back to life, the documentary filmmakers and their team made “four months of door-to-door” to recover images of anonymous people taken on the square and surrounding areas, by tourists, passers-by, evacuated faithful who had taken out their smartphones. Mixed with “official” images, those of the firefighters, of the neighboring Paris Police Prefecture, of the Elysée, of the journalists reporting images (JRI) dispatched to the site, this kaleidoscope of images taken on the spot is enriched by the a posteriori comments of the actors present, first and foremost the firefighters.
The words of anonymous people, of those “without rank”, provide all the richness of what could have been just another report on this extraordinary news item. At the Poissy barracks (5e district of Paris), Marie-Ange, 24 years old at the time, recounts how she faced that day « [son] first fire » – she will be part of the team which will climb the spiral staircase of the north transept, in total darkness and already unbearable heat, to assess the progress of the disaster.
One more documentary to the glory of firefighters? Certainly, but not only that… This victory against the « dragon »as they call their favorite enemy, is that of indisputable and spectacular know-how, of“operational intelligence” of the brigade called shortly after 6:30 p.m. on this famous April 15, 2019. “The real miracle is that there were no victims”conclude the directors.
