With the fall of Michel Barnier's government on Wednesday December 4, 2024, the political crisis opened with the dissolution of the National Assembly on June 9 reached an unprecedented milestone: for the first time since 1962, a Prime Minister was overthrown after having assumed responsibility.

The day after this censorship, it is Emmanuel Macron who is at the center of attention. Who will he choose as Prime Minister?

The name of MoDem president François Bayrou, early supporter of Emmanuel Macron, is cited a lot. He had lunch, Thursday, December 5, 2024, with the president at the Elysée and also spoke with another contender, the former socialist Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, the former mayor of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.

Those of the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, Xavier Bertrand, or the mayor of , François Baroin, are also circulating.

The very right-wing Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau, sometimes considered close to the ideas of the RN, or the historic Macronist Roland Lescure, associated with the social-democratic branch of Renaissance, are also the subject of speculation.

The Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, originally from Eure, assured this Thursday, December 5 on RTL, that he is not a candidate.

“Me, I’m a candidate for nothing”he declared to RTL who questioned him on the subject. Sébastien Lecornu also claims not to have raised the subject with President Emmanuel Macron during their trip to Saudi Arabia.

“There is a huge gap (…) between what we had to manage in Saudi Arabia and what we have to manage here”he declared on RTL, citing the various geopolitical issues from the escalation with Iran to the ceasefire in Lebanon, including the arrival of soldiers from North Korea in the Russian-Ukrainian theater .

“Yes, we have a world which is anything but stable and in which French political leaders will also have to take their responsibilities”, he added.

In terms of domestic policy, he considered that it was necessary “do everything so that the socialists break away from La France insoumise”.

“I don’t come from the left, but I am a Republican,” he stressed, specifying that he was working “with the republican left” in its department of Eure.

“I think that there must actually be a dialogue, because the responsibility of my political family, where I come from, is to allow the Socialist Party to evolve in its position”also opined Sébastien Lecornu.

“In any case, it is an emergency because it is a government party which has given France two Presidents of the Republic.”

Asked about the need to make concessions, he said that “the French, once they have voted in the early legislative elections, by definition, cannot understand that their political leaders are not capable of compromise”.
