It was another day marked by anger.
After VTCs, taxis, farmers and agents of the Departmental Council, thousands of public sector employees took to the streets of Toulouse this Thursday, December 5, 2024.
In Toulouse, the meeting was set for 2 p.m. at Jean Jaurès.
34.07% of teachers on strike
The “plan to combat absenteeism” announced by the resigning government ignited the fire within the public service unions.
The procession of this “massive” strike set off from Jean Jaurès in the direction of Joan of Arc on the Boulevard de Strasbourg. The Toulouse Academy announced nearly 34.07% participation among teachers. The FSU-SNUipp, the first union of primary schools (nursery and elementary), promised 65% of strikers throughout France.
-“For the first degree, participation is estimated at 42.18%. For secondary education, participation in middle schools is estimated at 29.70%, in general and technological high schools at 21.26% and in vocational high schools at 11.74%,” specifies the Academy.
12,000 demonstrators according to the CGT
According to the figures put forward by the CGT 31, no less than 12,000 strikers marched through the streets of Toulouse this Thursday. For his part, the Haute-Garonne prefecture estimated the number of participants at 6,000. The union also recorded notable participation in other meeting points, with approximately 500 demonstrators gathered in Saint-Gaudens and 200 in Muret in the morning.
Against the increase in waiting days
The inter-union (CFDT, CGT, UNSA, CFE-CGC, FSU, SUD, Solidaires, FA-FP) called on all public service personnel to mobilize in order to confront the “plan to combat absenteeism”. This measure announced by the resigning government provides to increase the number of waiting days from one to three days and to reduce remuneration to 90% of salary during sick leave.
Teachers against the elimination of 3,155 positions
On the other hand, a large majority of teachers joined the ranks of the mobilization following the call from the FSU-SNUipp, in order to protest against the measures of the Minister of Civil Service. These provide, among other things, for the elimination of 3,155 teaching positions. They are also asking for an increase in their salary while the 2025 budget provides for “a new freeze in the index point of civil servants”.
More moves to come
The anger of civil service staff could well continue in the weeks to come in the event of inaction.
«The December 5 strike can only be a starting point a stronger, long-term mobilization to build the balance of power with the government and win! The FSU-SNUipp 31 therefore calls on all colleagues to submit their intention to strike throughout the year,” promises the Haute-Garonne union.
