Starting XI
Thibaut Courtois
Had a quiet evening until the score was 0-1 in the 53rd minute, as the Basques had achieved little offensively up until then. How powerless was he when he conceded both goals? Iñaki Williams’ cross to set up the opening goal became longer and longer until the keeper had no choice but to deflect the ball into the middle. At 1:2 the person in charge is Federico Valverde. Still a used evening for the Los Blancos goalkeeper. REAL TOTAL-Note: 3,5.
Lucas Vazquez
All of his attempts towards the opponent’s half came to nothing and in most cases due to bad passes or coordination problems with his teammates. The result was eight ball losses. Vázquez basically didn’t do anything defensively. After his yellow card, Real’s captain had to be careful in a game that was full of duels. The 33-year-old would certainly have imagined his 366th game in the Whites jersey differently. REAL TOTAL-Note: 5.
Raul Asencio
In the early stages, the up-and-coming central defender was still biting and got to the ball at the right moment – the 21-year-old at least cleared six of them. But as the game progressed, he made more and more mistakes and he couldn’t compensate for the lack of structure in midfield and defense. He could probably have prevented and cleared the score from 0-1. REAL TOTAL-Note: 4.
Antonio Rüdiger
Against Athletic Club he was the most stable in defense and he also made small contributions up front. True to the motto “If no one else does it,” Rüdiger occasionally sneaked into the opponent’s penalty area, attempted a shot and ultimately won a penalty after a free kick. Significantly: His header in the action hit the crossbar, which was by far the most dangerous situation in the game – apart from Mbappé’s offside goal. REAL TOTAL-Note: 3,5.
Fran García (bis 71. Minute)
Had a damn hard time on his side against Álex Berenguer and Co. His offensive advances usually ended in loss of the ball because the opponents attacked with at least two people. He was only indirectly involved in Mbappé’s offside goal (13th). The pass rate of 72 percent and a ball loss rate of 17 fit the impression. Against the ball, the left-back was a bit overwhelmed at times, but the intensity hardly diminished due to the constant pressure from the opponents. REAL TOTAL-Note: 4,5.
Federico Valverde
The unlucky raven of the evening. Jude Bellingham had just equalized and then the otherwise reliable midfield strategist blacked out. In his own half, Valverde began to dribble towards Courtois’ box to free himself from the opponent’s pressure. That went terribly wrong and the ball ended up in the feet of Guruzeta, who just had to push it in. The Uruguayan didn’t do much else this time either, but without this capital error it wouldn’t have been particularly noticeable compared to the rest. REAL TOTAL-Note: 4.
Aurélien Tchouaméni (bis 71. Minute)
Again failed to bring structure to the midfield. He made a mistake right at the start that could have resulted in a goal conceded (9th). Although Tchouaméni tried to get more involved in the game with three long balls, he also lacked concentration and the necessary calm. REAL TOTAL-Note: 4,5.
Dani Ceballos (until 58th minute)
Dani Ceballos was unable to repeat his promising performance against Getafe. As always, the midfielder did not fail due to his fighting spirit and the necessary motivation. But – as with everyone else – the ability to bring control into the build-up game and put his colleagues in the spotlight. REAL TOTAL-Note: 4.
Jude Bellingham
Bellingham scored his fourth goal in a row against the Basques! The Englishman’s nose for goal is activated again, but this time it didn’t bring in any points either. Nevertheless: the midfielder was exactly in the right place when the equalizer came in the meantime. In addition, the 21-year-old initiated Mbappé’s offside goal with his lob. REAL TOTAL-Note: 3.
Kylian Mbappé
Admittedly, the Frenchman was always escorted towards the opponent’s goal by two or three opponents and could hardly use his dribbles. When he scored the supposed 1-0 goal, he was essentially offside twice (14th). Also sorry. But: What was going through the striker’s head when he took the penalty? Mbappé practically used a copy-paste when he shot, because in Liverpool he fired the exact same shot and saw the exact same result – namely nothing. The uncertainty with the new addition just won’t go away, the knot still doesn’t really break, so the top chance was missed after Rodrygo’s preparatory work (59th). REAL TOTAL-Note: 5.
Rodrygo Goes (bis 88. Minute)
Rodrygo took on the role of whirlwind in the attacking third. In the 15th minute, the Brazilian almost won a penalty, but the referee decided not to whistle it. The striker took the free kick that resulted in the penalty (67′). He was also indirectly involved in the 1-1 draw by passing the ball on. Four key passes also speak for his offensive efforts, as well as Mbappé’s top chance (59th). REAL TOTAL-Note: 3,5.
