The goals in Schaffhausen were once lofty. Now money problems are threatening the club massively.
20 years ago Schaffhausen was promoted to the Super League and stayed there for 3 years. After that it went down to the first division, but in the last few years the Munotstadters have picked themselves up again. Not much was missing in 2021/22 and they would have been promoted to the Super League again in the barrage against Lucerne.
Tempi passati. The FCS has been playing in the FCS Arena in a Challenge League jewel box for almost 8 years. According to managing director Jimmy Berisha, the stadium costs the club “1.2 to 1.3 million francs per year. These costs are too high.” At the end of November, Berisha sounds the alarm; Schaffhausen is on the verge of extinction without financial help.
Things aren’t going well in the league
Funds have already been requested from the city and the canton. But the administrative wheels grind slowly. “I don’t expect the support to come tomorrow either. Above all, we need to understand why we should be helped,” says Berisha. The aim is to build something “sustainable” in northeastern Switzerland.
You can already see what that could look like today. With a young team, coach Ciriaco Sforza sometimes plays attractive football. What’s missing is consistency. The FCS is currently in 9th place in the Challenge League.
The defending champion had to believe in it
There will be a highlight and some variety from everyday league life on Wednesday. In the Swiss Cup, Schaffhausen will face champions YB at home in the round of 16. Sforza’s team proved that an exploit is not impossible in the second round when they eliminated defending champion Servette 2-1.
By the way: Even with the bonuses for a possible quarter-final entry, you can’t buy much in Schaffhausen. Based on the previous income for surviving two rounds (9,000 francs), you only get 10,000 francs for a win in round 3. In return, all of the income from the home cup game goes into the FCS coffers. However, only just under 3,000 fans attended the game against Servette.
