RUSSIA – Its arrival in the atmosphere lit up the Russian sky and dazzled many inhabitants. On the night of December 3 to 4, 2024, an asteroid crashed near the city of Olekminsk located in the Republic of Sakha in Siberia.
As you can see in our video at the top of the articlethis celestial body was only spotted twelve hours before its impact on earth, according to the European Space Agency (ESA). The meteor was therefore hastily named C0WEPC5.
Still according to the ASE, the asteroid measured approximately 70 centimeters. A small size certainly, but which did not fail to impress the inhabitants of Olekminsk who shared C0WEPC5's crossing in the Siberian night, similar to a ball of fire, on social networks.
After its impact on the ground, no damage was reported despite the state of alert placed on the authorities of the Republic of Sakha. The Russian space agency initially described the asteroid as “potentially dangerous”.
