the essential
Teachers' unions, including Snuipp-FSU 31, are promising a “massive strike” in schools on Thursday, December 5, with a strike rate of 85%. Furthermore, the city of Toulouse is setting up its minimum service to accommodate students.
“In Haute-Garonne, the strike on December 5 will be very well attended with 85% of strikers in schools and already more than 150 schools closed.” The teaching unions, Snuipp-FSU 31 in the lead, are trying to once again mobilize their troops around several demands:the establishment of a three-day waiting period during sick leave, the elimination of 3,155 teaching positions in the 1is degree, announced by the government for the start of the 2025 school year, “while French classes are busier than those in other European countries.
In Haute-Garonne, the number of students per class is one of the highest in France and the DSDEN [direction des services de l’éducation nationale, NDLR] already announces 100 class closures to increase the replacement brigade.

“The numbers must be reduced”
While the situation of replacing absent teachers is increasingly tense, nothing is currently likely to reassure the parents of students who have continued to mobilize since the start of the school year to protest. The Snuipp-FSU “demands that the numbers be lowered in all classes and replacements be ensured”. The slip by former President of the Republic Nicolas Sarkozy on teachers “who work 24 hours a week and have six months of vacation” is also one of the reasons for teacher anger.
“An increase of 300 euros”
Finally, purchasing power is also a reason for discontent. “We are demanding an increase of €300 for everyone without compensation. The freezing of the index point impacts the purchasing power of civil servants (-18% since 2010)”, note the unions. “For FSU-SNUipp 31, explains the union, the instability of the current political situation further reinforces the need for the December 5 strike. Whatever the political scenarios that follow, the budgetary debates will resume at some point, and our political leaders will have to take into account our demands, which are at the heart of the issues of the public debate.
General assembly and events
Several meetings are planned for Thursday: at At 9:30 a.m., a general meeting will take place at the Labor Exchange in Toulouse. It will be followed by a demonstration at 2 p.m. (Jean Jaurès metro station). A demonstration will take place in Saint-Gaudens, place du Pilat (10 a.m.), at 10:30 a.m. in Muret, near the sub-prefecture.
Minimum service in Toulouse
Furthermore, the city of Toulouse is setting up its minimum service for welcoming students whose schools will be closed. Disruptions are expected. The municipality indicates that “meals will not be delivered to the canteens. Children may be welcomed with a packed lunch provided by parents (subject to sufficient supervision)”.
