Shock for FC Bayern in the DFB Cup clash against Leverkusen: Manuel Neuer received a straight red card early on. On the internet, the fans rage against the keeper.
Munich – Is Manuel Neuer, of all people, responsible for the decisive scene early on in the eagerly awaited DFB Cup round of 16 (here in the live ticker) between FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen?
Bayern keeper Neuer received a red card in the DFB Cup against Leverkusen
It was the 17th minute of the game in the Allianz Arena when Neuer made a blatant miss: After a long ball to Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong, Neuer came far out of his goal – and cleared the nimble Bayer star around 20 meters in front of the goal with a violent one Body check off. His colleagues Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano are about the same level.
-Referee Harm Osmers hesitates briefly and finally shows the Bayern captain the red card. A tough but justifiable decision. Neuer and his colleagues don't want to believe it, discuss it briefly with the referee, but the decision is made. The VAR no longer intervenes either, supporting Osmers' initial perception.
First dismissal for Neuer ever
However, experts initially disagree about the expulsion. “For me, the red card is fine,” explains, for example ARD-Commentator Tom Bartels. Be SkyColleague Wolf Fuss, on the other hand, believes the decision is too harsh. ARDExpert and former Bayern captain Bastian Schweinsteiger explains: “I remember a similar scene in the World Cup final against Higuain. But he clearly played the ball. Manu is simply late for the ball today. The danger is always there with long balls.”
It's an unpleasant premiere for the long-time national goalkeeper. After over 800 professional games, Neuer received the first dismissal of his entire career. “It's very rare that Neuer loses his head like that,” said Bartels afterwards about the 2014 world champion keeper.
Fans rage against FCB keeper: “He should finally resign”
Shortly afterwards, Neuer had to face a lot of ridicule and anger from fans online. “What the hell was he thinking? Laimer was there. And that in the 17th minute in a game like this… unbelievable,” complains a fan X. Another writes: “Thanks Neuer! That was it again with the DFB Cup this year.” Yet another simply says: “He should finally resign.”
Even without the scorn of the fans, Neuer himself will probably be most annoyed about the sending off, as he is doing his team a disservice against the reigning double winners Leverkusen. After the red card against the 38-year-old, substitute keeper Daniel Peretz came into the game for Leroy Sané – while Neuer had to leave the field early for the first time in his career.
