Sea of red and white flags at the European Handball Championship: TV Endingen cheers on the Swiss women’s team in the St. Jakobshalle
The preliminary round games of the Women’s European Championship between the Faroe Islands and Croatia and between Switzerland and Denmark took place on Sunday. Right in the middle: around 100 members of the Endingen gymnastics club.
A home European championship in women’s handball is a rare event. Since November 28th, 24 teams have been fighting for the title, including in the catacombs of the St. Jakobshalle in Basel. On Sunday, the Swiss handball players shone against title favorites Denmark. They were also loudly cheered on by around 100 members of TV Endingen – more precisely by the handball players from the U9, U11 and U13 teams as well as their parents and the club board. A real club highlight, it says in a statement.
The children and their parents provided red and white support in Sector E, some in Swiss national jerseys, others in shirts from TV Endingen or HSG Baden-Endingen. They were able to see first hand how the Faroe Islands wrested a draw from favorites Croatia. In the second game, the Swiss women’s national team showed full commitment, but had to admit defeat to the strong team from Denmark by a five-goal difference. Nevertheless, it was a successful performance by the Swiss, which was enthusiastically celebrated by the many fans from the Zurzibiet.
For the young handball players from Surbtal, the atmosphere in the St. Jakobshalle, in front of over 5,000 spectators, was an unforgettable experience, the statement continues. “They will be talking about the atmosphere and the impressive scenery for a long time.” (the)
