In the classic between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern, a heated scene during the game went unnoticed. The focus is on Leroy Sané – should the winger have been sent off?

Munich – The incident occurred during a throw-in by FC Bayern near the Dortmund goal. As can be seen in the recording of the game, Sané hit his opponent Pascal Groß in the face with his elbow. Groß held his head, but continued playing without interruption, so that neither referee Sven Jablonski nor the video referee intervened.

For former Bundesliga referee Thorsten Kinhöfer, this was a clear wrong decision. “If Groß drops down and holds his face, as most players do these days, it will probably be considered assault,” Kinhöfer told the Bild.

Kinhöfer pointed out that Sané was very lucky not to be sent off. “Even if he doesn’t hit it fully – he swings and it’s a punch. “That clearly goes towards violence,” he explained. In particular, the former referee did not accept the argument that it could have been a reflex. Groß’s slight pushing does not justify Sané’s reaction, said Kinhöfer.

VAR and referees in the crossfire of criticism

The scene has already made waves on social media and has once again sparked discussions about the use of VAR in such sensitive situations. Fans and experts complain that referee Jablonski and his team should have taken a closer look. The scene remains a bitter aftertaste for Dortmund, as a sending off for Sané could have significantly changed the course of the game.

At the press conference before the DFB Cup game against Leverkusen, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany reacted calmly: “I watched the game against Dortmund twice and didn’t notice it.” Ultimately, the people of Munich will be happy that Jablonski didn’t see this scene either.
