Cyclist Remco Evenepoel had an accident during a training ride and was subsequently taken to hospital. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the 24-year-old Belgian Olympic champion would no longer have been able to avoid an open door of a car from BPost, the postal company of Belgium.
It is not yet known how much damage Evenepoel has sustained.
The accident happened in Oetingen, in the province of Flemish Brabant. Emergency workers performed the first medical checks on the spot before Evenepoel was taken to hospital in an ambulance. He was conscious the entire time and sat upright.
Olympic and world champion
Evenepoel has had a successful season, in which he won the Olympic road race and the Olympic time trial. He is also the reigning world time trial champion and came third in the Tour de France.
Evenepoel’s program for the new season is not yet known. The cycling season will start again in Australia in January, but the most important races for Evenepoel are later in the year.
