Niels Arestrup, actor who played in “Black Baron”, “My heart has stopped beating” and “A Prophet”, has died at the age of 75. With three Caesars, his passion was theater. Actresses had also criticized him for latent violence.
His steel blue gaze and his presence left an impression. With more than 50 years of career, Niels Arestrup was a must on the big and small screens but first and foremost a man of the theater. This son of Danish immigrants begins his career on the stage, and will quickly understand what his best asset will be: his image as a discreet, touchy man, which will follow him throughout his career.
With a Molière and three Césars for supporting roles, he was a headliner in the theater, rarely in the cinema. Niels Arestrup also has his gray areas. Several actresses have testified to his violent behavior in the 1980s, like Isabelle Adjani who said she received a slap from the actor. Accusations which he will defend himself for a long time. His sulphurous image had faded with age. Niels Arestrup will remain one of the notable faces of French cinema and theater.
