Rapper Dave Blunts performed with an oxygen tank in a moving tribute to the late Juice WRLD at the annual Juice WRLD Day concert in Chicago. The event, held on what would have been the late rapper’s 26th birthday, brought together a diverse array of hip-hop talent, with Blunts’ performance standing out as one of the night’s most talked-about moments.
Gritty with words, and unapologetic in stage presence, this performance was going to be tougher as Blunts went about it with the oxygen tank. It’s no secret that Blunts has been open about a host of ongoing health concerns he’s battling, and his need for an oxygen tank on this set underlined how one brave rapper fights on against real life.
A tribute to Juice WRLD, who died in December 2019 due to an overdose, lay at the core of the evening. Blunts, who was close to the late rapper, first gave an emotional tribute before he launched into a medley of his hits. The challenges never deterred the energy of the rapper, and the crowd answered with raucous applause and cheers.
However, the night wasn’t all fun and games, as Blunts also got serious, addressing recent comments from hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg. Snoop, never one to shy away from humorous, and sometimes sharp, social media posts, had taken a jab at Blunts’ appearance on Instagram, saying, “Put down the chicken wings and Tata chips, Nefew and that chair gon’ break soon get to the end of the cup.”
Blunts, who never held his tongue for anyone, fired back during his set. As he gripped the microphone, Blunts snapped, “I see the big dog talking. Snoop, you think you funny? You don’t know what it’s like to fight for your life every damn day. I got demons, and a tank to prove it. Don’t come for me when you have been blessed enough to be here that long, respect the struggle.”
The crowd erupted as Blunts responded, with several fans seeming to side with the rapper in a defiant act. As Snoop Dogg’s comment seemed light-hearted and jokingly given, Blunts’ reaction brought out how much stress one is usually put under in the community of hip-hop, from substance abuse problems to scrutiny by the general public.
Snoop Dogg, who was absent at Juice WRLD Day, has not yet responded to Blunts’ comments. But the moment managed to add an extra layer of drama to an otherwise charged evening in memory of the life and legacy of Juice WRLD.
For Blunts, the night was not just about music but a statement of survival and defiance. “I do this for Juice. I do this for me,” Blunts shouted as he closed out his set. “We keep going, no matter what.”
Juice WRLD Day 2024 is at the United Center in Chicago and features performances from a number of other rappers and friends of his, including Lil Uzi Vert, Kid LAROI, and Future. The event has grown in prominence, a grim reminder of the impact that Juice WRLD has had on the music world and the struggles that many artists battle in the industry.
