Born in Saint-Servan, he is a politician who left his mark on the Saint-Malo region, but was also an important French political actor. He was married to Leila Khaled-Khodja, an educational psychologist.
Director of schools at the Ministry of National Education
Graduated with a degree in literature from the University of Grenoble, he first left to teach in Morocco. Then, he was a teacher in Pleurtuit (35), at the Ker Goat center. During a long sick leave, he prepared for the ENA competition. He was accepted into the Turgot class (1966-1968).
He then held various prefectural functions. In ministerial cabinets, he works at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as at the Ministry of Labor. He holds the important position of director of schools at the Ministry of National Education. In this position, he contributed significantly to reforms of the school system. He then became inspector general of administration.
From 1988, he was deputy for Ille-et-Vilaine; this until 2012, giving way to Gilles Lurton. He is registered with the UMP group of the National Assembly, then on the non-registered bench.
From 1989 to 2014, René Couanau was mayor of Saint-Malo. His action in the city was important. It focused, in particular, on the arrival of the TGV, the remunicipalization of water, sanitation works, social policy and heritage.
