Why Musah will play a key tactical role for Milan against Empoli

Paulo Fonseca appears likely to rely on Yunus Musah for today’s game against Empoli, giving him his first consecutive starts of the season.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanPress) report this morning, Musah will be one of the tactical keys again. Fonseca views him as an important utility man given he can raise and lower the American’s position depending on the needs of a match.

In essence, Musah could push up to be part of the attacking trident that will support the striker Alvaro Morata, meaning he would play alongside his compatriot Christian Pulisic. However, he can also drop into a wing-back position or even tuck in to form a midfield three.

In the non-possession phase, we could see the Rossoneri therefore switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 with Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders as the other starters in the middle of the park. Thus, Fonseca can manage the needs of the game as it happens.

For the former Valencia man, it is expected to be the second consecutive match as a starter. It has not happened to him yet this season, and it is a nice way to celebrate his birthday given that he turned 22 years of age yesterday.
