Belgian singer Bert De Coninck has died at the age of 75, reports ‘VRT NWS’. He became known in our country in the 1970s for the song ‘Evelyne’. Later he was in the new wave band Crapule de Luxe.
The song ‘Evelyne’, in which the main character shares a bed with the married Evelyne during the day, was widely played on Dutch radio by VARA. In a conversation with presenter Felix Meurders, Bert said that ‘Evelyne’ really existed. “She looked very good and she was very special,” he said.
‘Evelyne’ caused a stir in conservative Flanders, writes VRT NWSbut according to Bert it wasn’t too bad. However, he was shocked when the Frisian band De Kast covered the song years later. According to Bert, the band said that at first they were ‘somewhat averse’ to the song because of the subject.
‘Evelyne’ turned out to be Bert’s only big hit. In the 1980s he formed the new wave band Crapule de Luxe. That band also received a lot of appreciation from the Netherlands. Bert has rarely performed in recent years. He lived in Portugal and he died there too.
