MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Friday is Black Friday, which the Associated Press reports is the biggest day of the year for retail foot traffic in the U.S.
Shoppers lined up at different stores bright and early looking for the best deals on Black Friday.
“We had folks at the doors, we opened the doors, my team was ready to go and away we went,” Marquette Township Menards General Manager Daniel Staley said.
Marquette Township’s Menards even opened its doors earlier than the scheduled 6:00 a.m. opening time, according to Staley.
“I believe we are trending more traffic-wise to be pre-pandemic,” Staley said. “However it’s still not the same. The sales tend to be spread out a little bit longer which I think is better for everybody.”
Staley also contributes this more staggered pattern to online sales.
“Online shopping is getting more and more prevalent and I think it will continue to do so,” Staley said. “People just enjoy the convenience of it.”
These changes have been seen in big and small stores. Downtown Marquette’s Getz’s Clothiers experienced steady foot traffic throughout the morning. Men’s Department Manager Kurt Freudenstein says it typically peaks in the early afternoon.
“Ever since COVID it’s been like that,” Freudenstein said. “There were a few customers outside so we were happy to let them in and happy to see their faces and eager to help them but over the course of the day we get some steady increase in business usually around like noon to two.”
Even though the crowds today at Getz’s may not have been quite as big as before the pandemic, Black Friday remains one of the company’s busiest shopping days of the year.
“The busiest if not the second busiest,” Freudenstein said. “But we have all hands on deck and we’re ready to help everybody that comes in.”
Both Getz’s and Menards are offering sales throughout the weekend and into Cyber Monday.
