Amandine Chazot, double world stand-up paddle vice-champion and six-time French champion, died at the age of 33 from cancer. She was one of the greatest ambassadors of her sport. Last June, she carried the Olympic flame during her visit to Finistère.
For several years, high-level athlete Amandine Chazot had been battling cancer. In June 2024, she told Ouest-France to “fight intensely” the disease. She spoke of her love for her sport: “Alone on the water, I feel a kind of fusion with the ocean, it’s like meditation.” Since January, she had put her career as a doctor on hold to devote herself to her passion. A few weeks before the 2024 JOPs, the young mother had confided to the Telegram his desire to resume competition: “This year, as I have a chemo session every three weeks, I resumed competition in paddle”.
The Brittany Surf League published this message on Twitter, saluting its determination and perseverance: “It is with immense sadness that the Brittany Surf League learns of the premature departure of Amandine Chazot, an exceptional athlete. and a source of inspiration for our entire community. His light and his smile will continue to shine in our memories, and his journey will remain an example for generations…”
More than a sportswoman
Originally from Finistère, Amandine Chazot worked as a radiologist at the Cornouaille hospital in Quimper alongside her sport. “She had decided since the beginning of the year to put her radiologist coat in the locker room and return to competition,” the French Surfing Federation said in a press release. In May she notably won the Green Paddle Race in Loire-Atlantique. She carried the Olympic flame during its visit to La Torche beach on June 7. “Forever in our hearts, she will remain a model for all those who share the love of the ocean and surfing,” salutes the Brittany Surf League.
