With a tight throat, Emmanuel Macron paid a moving tribute to General Georgelin, who died in 2023. The president praised the general's involvement in the cathedral construction site.

During the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame de Cathedral, Emmanuel Macron, deeply moved, paid tribute to General Jean-Louis Georgelin, who died in August 2023. With a tight voice and eyes full of emotion, the president evoked the capital importance of the general in the reconstruction of the cathedral, emphasizing that he had “achieved what we thought was impossible“. He recalled the decisive role of the public establishment responsible for the conservation and restoration of the cathedral, but it is above all the personality of the general which marked the President of the Republic.

From 2019 to 2023, General Georgelin embodied the strength and leadership behind the restoration of the historic monument. Emmanuel Macron expressed his admiration for the rigor and commitment of the general, who carried out this project with unfailing determination. “He would have been proud and happy. He would have greeted each of you, by your first and last name, as usual, with this stentorian voice», declared the president, emphasizing the human character and vision of Georgelin.

General Jean-Louis Georgelin died on August 18, 2023 in a mountain accident, after a fall while hiking in the Pyrenees. His successor, Marc Jost, was appointed in August 2023 to take over as head of the Notre-Dame de Paris restoration project.
