From the entrance to the cathedral, the dazzling whiteness of the stone is evident. The restoration of the vaults and masonry also begins in January 2022, with the reconstruction of the collapsed vaults in the nave, the north arm of the transept and the transept crossing. At the same time, the stones weakened by the fire, in particular those of the chest walls, the gable walls and the vaults of the nave, the choir and the two arms of the transept, are either consolidated or replaced. All the technical installations of the cathedral have been completely overhauled, including a renovated fire protection system, including a water mist (misting) device for the oak frames. The restored cathedral is now equipped with new chairs for the faithful. In addition, the diocese of Paris installed interior lighting and a sound system adapted to the practice of Catholic worship. This photograph shows the south rose of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, offered by Saint Louis in 1260, and measuring almost 13 meters in diameter. Designed by Jean de Chelles and Pierre de Montreuil , it was restored in the 18th and 19th centuries, under the direction of Viollet-le-Duc. The stained glass window thus retains medieval elements as well as additions made during restorations. (STEPHANE DE SAKUTIN / POOL / AFP)
More than 1,200 oak trees were cut down to make the new frame. It is therefore not surprising that the artisans nicknamed this place “the forest”. Here, each step was carried out according to the methods used 800 years ago. (SARAH MEYSSONNIER / POOL / AFP)
