The president of the General Council of Dentists, Dr. Óscar Castro, has warned that patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have a greater risk of suffering from oral pathologies such as cavities, among others, which is why he has urged them to attend the clinic regularly.
“Due to the weakening of their immune system, these people are more likely to suffer from conditions such as cavities, warts and mouth ulcers, candidiasis, gingivitis, periodontitis, hairy leukoplakia or xerostomia. That is why it is crucial that they visit the dentist regularly, to prevent and treat these pathologies, as well as to receive adequate hygiene and oral care guidelines,” Castro explained in a statement.
These HIV-associated lesions can be painful and make chewing or swallowing difficult, worsening the patient's quality of life, and even worsening their general health.
This is why, ahead of World AIDS Day, which is commemorated this Sunday, dentists recommend “adequate care” to prevent secondary infections and improve the overall immune status.
Castro has assured that dentists “know perfectly” the protocols for treating this type of patient, which is why they play “a fundamental role” both in detecting the disease and in providing them with well-being, in addition to giving them “care without prejudice” in a “inclusive and respectful environment.”
The president of the organization has also expressed that a “coordinated and humanized” multidisciplinary approach can make a “big difference” in the quality of life of these people.
“In addition, the combined antiretroviral treatments that currently exist make the disease chronic, reduce the viral load and restore the function of the immune system, helping to reduce oral problems and other complications,” he added.
