Everton and Manchester United are set to go head-to-head on Sunday afternoon, and Wayne Rooney has already given his stance on the match between two of his former clubs.
Wayne Rooney started his career at Everton, breaking onto the scene as a sixteen-year-old.
He scored 17 goals in 77 games during his first spell at Goodison Park, before making the switch to Manchester United for £20 million.
Interestingly, Rooney has already shared the story of how he left Everton, which involved picking Manchester United due to the fact it would annoy Liverpool fans.
Picking between Manchester United and Everton isn’t easy, given what both clubs mean to the 39-year-old, but he shared his stance on the meeting the last time these two sides met.

Wayne Rooney shared his stance on Manchester United vs Everton back in March
Manchester United hosted Everton on March 9th 2024 in a game that ended 2-0 to the home side. Two penalties on that day secured all three points, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford stepping up.
This time round it’s a completely different situation, with Ruben Amorim fresh in the manager’s chair with a point to prove after a draw in his first Premier League outing.
However, this game is also of importance to Wayne Rooney, given his allegiances to both clubs.
Interestingly, he shared his stance on the fixture back in March for the last clash, and as you could probably guess, he pretty much sat on the fence.
Speaking on TNT Sports commentary, he refused to pick a winner.
“It’s always a difficult one for me because I have so much love for both clubs. Obviously Everton are in a bit of a difficult position right now in the league and United aren’t where we want them to be. I’m just looking forward to seeing a good game and may the best team win.”
A win for Everton is vital against Manchester United
Wolves, Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester City are all playing in winnable games, so there’s bound to be some ground gained on the Toffees if they suffer defeat.
The gap is just two points from the bottom three after Wolves picked up three points and Ipswich drew to Manchester United.
This and the Wolves game the following week could be make-or-break for Sean Dyche, especially as Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea follow after that.
Playing Manchester United in their current state could work to Everton’s advantage, as they’re still gelling together as a team and they carry some fitness issues into this one after Thursday.
