Ronald de Boer does not think that Devyne Rensch will extend his expiring contract with Ajax. The analyst bases his opinion on an interview that the defender conducted Ziggo Sports after the lost Europa League match against Real Sociedad (2-0) on Thursday evening.
In conversation with Wytse van der Goot, Rensch discusses his (contract) situation at Ajax. “I’m just really focusing on Ajax. I feel good here, I’m comfortable in my own skin. I have a role that suits me, so I’m comfortable here. Of course my contract will expire, so we’ll see. “
When asked whether he is ‘in discussions with the club’, Rensch answers in the affirmative. “Not even necessarily now, but also last year. I am always in discussions with Ajax, so to speak.”
It is a given that the single Dutch international will not simply leave Amsterdam. Yet he audibly keeps the door ajar. “I’m a club boy, but I do think: The longer it takes, the less likely I am to sign. But it can change in a moment. We’ll see.”
If a new club wants to strengthen itself with Rensch, ‘all the pieces of the puzzle have to fall into place’, according to the right back. “I also have to feel good at that club, so there are a lot of things that have to go well. I’m not going to sign blind. But I’m comfortable here now, so we’ll see.”
After seeing the interview, De Boer has little time to draw his conclusions. “He’s leaving, that’s what I hear. He’s keeping his options open and I understand that.”
Given his expiring contract and the interest from larger clubs than Ajax – according to Spanish media, Rensch is interested in both Liverpool and FC Barcelona – the Amsterdam youth product is on solid footing during contract negotiations. “If you are in a position like his: expiring contract, there is interest… It couldn’t be better, could it?”, De Boer concludes with a rhetorical question.
