Elfsborg proved no match for Athletic Club. The Basque side secured their fourth victory of the season in the Europa League, their third at San Mamés, with ease, facing no real challenges unlike their previous match against Slavia Prague, where the visitors left Bilbao empty-handed, despite earning it. The encounter was merely a formality. The Lions accomplished their task comfortably, without any hint of overconfidence.

The Swedish team was the weakest to grace the rojiblanco pitch this season. Furthermore, the Lions quickly paved the way for victory with a goal from Adama Boiro right from the start. The young player, recently signed from Osasuna, also set up Guruzeta for the third goal after a well-executed move. The defender pushed forward in attack, an aspect he had lacked in previous league matches. Such encounters allow less regular players to shine and build confidence for the remainder of the season. This was evident yesterday with the left-back who stepped in for Yuri, who suffered an injury during the last training session.

Athletic continues to thrive in the second continental competition. Valverde’s team has amassed thirteen points from a possible fifteen, an ideal scenario that everyone would have agreed to prior to the start. The Bilbao side has secured their qualification for the next round in just five matches played, and more importantly, they have taken a giant step towards positioning themselves among the top eight, securing direct passage to the round of sixteen and avoiding the two matches in the knockout stage. One could not ask for more.
