Union SG won its first match in the Europa League this season on Thursday. The people of Brussels were a bit too strong for Twente, and won 0-1 on the field against the Dutch.
Union SG desperately needed points in the Europa League. After four games in Europe, the people of Brussels were left with only 2 points, clearly not enough.
But that changed on Thursday. The people from Brussels took on FC Twente, in the Netherlands. It quickly became clear that Union was the best team on the field.
After six minutes, the people of Brussels capitalized on their dominance… Or so it seemed. A wonderful attack eventually reached Boufal, who served Ivanovic. He in turn tapped the goal against the ropes, but the VAR disallowed the goal for offside.
But after 12 minutes of play it was a prize. Fuseini took advantage of the space he was given and was able to finish through the legs of the Twente goalkeeper. 0-1 for Union. With this score we finally went into half time.
And whether they were in a bad mood there in the Netherlands. During half-time a serious whistle concert was played because the home team failed so well. Union was simply a class too strong for Twente. But the Eredivisie club clearly came out of the dressing rooms sharper.
The first chances were for Twente and Union struggled for a while. The match was much more balanced after the break, with a few chances on both sides, but no more goals were scored.
So Union won its first match this season in the Europa League with 0-1 against FC Twente. This puts the Unionists in 24th place in the League Phase, with 5 points.
