Some regrets, despite everything. Former coach of AS Monaco for 18 months, Philippe Clement was fired one year from the end of his contract, the fault of disappointing results and the long-awaited non-qualification for the Champions League, which finally arrived under under the direction of Adi Hütter. For a year, the Belgian technician has been on the bench of Rangers, who will challenge Nice this Thursday evening at the Allianz Riviera with the hope of obtaining a third victory in the tournament.
The difficulty of motivating players in Monaco
In Monaco, he therefore experienced some difficulties, in particular that of keeping the players under pressure, which is not easy given the affluence of Louis-II, which obviously has nothing to do with that of the Ibrox Park in Glasgow and its “50,000 or 55,000 spectators” at each match. “If you don’t play well, you’re immediately made aware of it in town, where there’s a lot of talk about football. In Monaco, on the Côte d’Azur, the players are less exposed to pressure from the supporters, the adrenaline must come more from the team itself,” judged the technician, aware of the many changes that have occurred in Monaco since his departure, particularly in the organization chart and in terms of player arrivals.
“I expected that we could spend more on transfers,” regrets Clement
Recruiting players, in fact, was much more difficult for him, and he didn’t hide it. “I expected that we could spend more on transfers. There were factual choices for the good financial health of the club to let players leave, like Benoît Badiashile in January, without replacing him. At that time, I said that we also needed a midfielder, but that was not possible,” commented the one who recalled the balance of the two transfer windows under his leadership, namely that “Between sales and purchases, we were positive to the tune of 120 million euros”.
Regretting of course the fact of having missed qualification for the Champions League, while highlighting the progress made by Aurélien Tchouaméni, Benoî Badiashilet and Axel Disasi since, the one who extended until 2028 with the Rangers, also noted similarities between the two projects and the departures of many players with the imperative of a project to be almost completely rebuilt.
