The English Liverpool team was able to break a contract that lasted for more than 15 years against Real Madrid, by achieving a well-deserved 2-0 victory in the fifth round of the group stage in the Champions League, in the match that was held on Wednesday at Anfield. The goals of the match were scored by Alexis McAllister in the 52nd minute and Cody Jacobo in the 77th minute.
With this victory, Liverpool raised its score to 15 points, achieving the full mark at the top of the group, which boosted the team’s morale before its next confrontation against Manchester City in the English Premier League on Sunday. As for Real Madrid, the defending European champion, it suffered its second loss in a row and third in the tournament this season, leaving its score frozen at 6 points and falling to fourth place.
This is Liverpool’s first victory over Real Madrid since March 2009, when they beat them 4-0 in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League. This victory came after a series of Madrid dominance that lasted for seven matches, which witnessed one draw and six defeats for the Reds, including two losses in the final match in 2018 and 2022.
The first half witnessed great control by Liverpool, as Thibaut Courtois, the Real Madrid goalkeeper, excelled in stopping dangerous opportunities from Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. On the other hand, Real Madrid did not provide a performance worthy of its reputation, as it lacked offensive effectiveness, amid the absence of the influence of its main players such as Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Luka Modric.
In the second half, Liverpool’s advantage continued, as McAllister opened the scoring after a brilliant save from Courtois from Connor Bradley’s header. However, Mbappe missed the chance to equalize by missing a penalty kick that was saved by goalkeeper Quemin Kelleher. Cody Jacobo added the second goal with a beautiful header, deciding the match in Liverpool’s favour. Despite Real Madrid’s attempts in the final minutes, Courtois made a save from Luis Diaz in the 91st minute to prevent the gap from increasing.
