Nothing went as planned for AS Monaco who, after a dream start, sank against Benfica (2-3), which inevitably annoyed their coach.
Monaco did not deserve such a final. Tuesday evening at Louis-II, the team led by Adi Hütter fell for the first time this season in the Champions League, against Benfica (2-3). A defeat which was difficult to see coming even shortly after the expulsion of Wilfried Singo (58th) because ASM led 2-1 in the 67th minute. But she broke down twice in four minutes at the end of the match while she was outnumbered, especially in front of Angel Di Maria's passing talent.
“It’s a heavy defeat but we have to accept it”
“I am annoyed by the result because we started very well. We had an excellent first fifteen minutes, we scored a fantastic goal and then we made too many mistakes,” summarized the coach of the princely club, who also considered Rade Obrenovic's refereeing to be “exaggerated”, the latter having distributed four yellow cards at the same time in the first period, without mentioning the second yellow addressed to Wilfried Singo, synonymous with expulsion.
Unwilling to talk about the refereeing, Hütter did not like the way he defended in the area, and underlined his significant disappointment. “We deserved at least a draw. It’s a heavy defeat but we have to accept it.” Appearing logically frustrated, the Austrian technician does not intend to vary his approach which brought ASM back into the queen of European competitions, while Benfica seemed more experienced on Wednesday evening. “What Benfica does doesn't matter much. They have experienced players but we have our way of doing things”, relying in particular on the youth and talent of Soungoutou Magassa, scorer for the 2-1. “This is the path we want to follow. It's not an excuse”, reframed a coach who will seek to move forward very quickly, in Marseille on Sunday, for a clash between the 2nd and 3rd of the French championship.
