Ngal’ayel Mukau made a name for himself across Europe yesterday. The 20-year-old Congolese Belgian, who came over from KV Mechelen in the summer, single-handedly scored Lille’s two visiting goals in Bologna (1-2). As 12th in the Champions League rankings, Lille takes a giant step towards the jump-offs for the 1/8th finals.

Mukau graces the front page of L’Equipe this morning: “Mukau, le maestro”. The midfielder turned 20 at the beginning of this month.

KV Mechelen offered him his first professional contract in the summer of 2022. KVM broke his contract in January, but Lille signed him away in July until 2028.

Ngal’ayel Mukau arrived in a fresh and youthful team – but also with the necessary experience, as evidenced by the presence of Thomas Meunier – and immediately made his mark. In September he was slowed down for a few weeks by a sprained ankle, but that did not stop his progress.

He made the difference yesterday in a more attacking role. In only his 3rd CL match he scored 0-1 and 1-2.

The 20-year-old Belgian has young talents next to him such as Matias Fernandez-Pardo (19 years old) and Ayyoub Bouaddi (17).

Just before half time, Mukau scored the opening goal on the rebound, after the 1-1 from Lucumi (ex-Genk) he made it 1-2 just after the hour on a pass from Fernandez-Pardo.

“I am very pleased that our young players are blossoming so much,” said coach Bruno Genesio after the match. “But you also need leaders and experienced players. And that is what makes our strength: the chemistry between very young players who are impatient and players with slightly more experience, both tactically and emotionally more stable.”

Mukau was the chef’s surprise at kick-off. He was behind top scorer Jonathan David (ex-Ghent) instead of Rémy Cabella.

After a blunder by the home defense, David Mukau scored the 0-1 in two moments. A covering error allowed Lucumi to score Bologna’s first European goal. But 3 minutes later it was erased again, when Mukau finished a cross backwards from the penalty point.

With 10 points from 5 matches, Lille is in 12th place, making it almost certain to finish between 9th and 24th. Those teams may play jump-offs for the 1/8th finals.

Perhaps they can dream of more, because in principle they receive 2 weaker teams at home: Sturm Graz (29th) and Feyenoord (21st). Liverpool away is a different story.

Lille – without Mukau – beat Real 1-0, the 1-3 in Atletico Madrid, the 1-1 against Juventus and yesterday Mukau participated.

Since losing their CL opener against Sporting in mid-September, Mukau and co. 12 matches undefeated. Lille also ranks 4th in its own competition.

Meunier (l) congratulates Mukau.

Lewis Ferguson (Bologna) kicks on goal, but his shot goes wide.

Free kick for Bologna. Edon Zhegrova (Lille OSC) held Jhon Lucumí and the referee saw that.

Santiago Castro (Bologna) is blown back by the referee. He went too hard on Mitchel Bakker (Lille OSC).

An extra 5 minutes will be added.

Remo Freuler (Bologna) is whistled back by the referee. He went too hard on Alexsandro Ribeiro (Lille OSC).

Save from Lukasz Skorupski (Bologna), who is able to parry the ball while diving.

Ayyoub Bouaddi (Lille OSC) scores…

Sam Beukema (Bologna) is whistled back by the referee. He went too hard on Jonathan David (Lille OSC).

The line judge’s flag goes up: Dan Ndoye (Bologna) was offside.
