Chennai rains 2024: Schools closed, holiday declared in several districts

Chennai and its surrounding districts are facing intense rainfall, causing widespread disruptions and prompting the government to declare school holidays in several regions. The heavy downpour, triggered by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, has led to significant waterlogging, traffic congestion, and safety concerns.

CHENNAI WEATHER TODAY: IMD ALERT

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert in Chennai and nearby areas, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h are also expected. A yellow alert is, in effect, emphasising preparedness and caution.

DISTRICTS AFFECTED BY HEAVY RAIN IN CHENNAI

Schools have been closed in the following districts:

  • Chennai
  • Kancheepuram
  • Thiruvallur
  • Chengalpattu
  • Cuddalore
  • Villupuram

Authorities declared these closures to ensure the safety of students and school staff, as heavy rain has caused waterlogging and made commuting dangerous.

GOVERNMENT MEASURES AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has mobilised extensive resources to address the situation effectively. Emergency teams have been deployed in flood-prone areas to provide immediate assistance, while relief camps have been established to shelter displaced residents. Efforts are underway to strengthen drainage systems to prevent further waterlogging.

Additionally, essential supplies, including food, drinking water, and medicines, have been stockpiled to ensure timely aid for those affected.

The government is also monitoring reservoirs and water bodies to ensure controlled water release and prevent flooding.

The current weather situation in Chennai highlights the importance of preparedness and community cooperation. With continued rainfall predicted, authorities are working round the clock to mitigate risks and ensure public safety. Residents are advised to stay alert, heed IMD warnings, and take necessary precautions as the city braces for further challenges.
