VAR ruled out a late winner for Aston Villa as they saw out a 0-0 draw with Juventus in the Champions League.
Going into the game at Villa Park, Unai Emery’s side was on the back of an awful run of form.
The Claret and Blue side were six matches without a win and the tie against the Old Lady was seen as an opportunity to get back to winning ways.
Juventus had multiple players out for the Villa match, including former star Douglas Luiz.
Then, after a tight affair, Villa thought they had netted a winner in added time when Morgan Rogers bundled the ball into the net.
However, the goal was eventually ruled out by VAR for a foul which turned out to be a highly controversial decision…
Michael Dawson insists Morgan Rogers’ disallowed goal vs Juventus was ‘soft’
In the 94th minute, a Youri Tielemans cross was sent into the box in the hope of finding a Claret and Blue player. Diego Carlos initially went for the ball but was met by Juventus ‘keeper before it eventually fell to Rogers who prodded it in from close range.
Within Villa Park, there was confusion if the referee had given the goal until VAR eventually confirmed it had been disallowed.
The decision to disallow Rogers’ goal was met with outrage from Villa fans as it potentially cost them key points in the Champions League.
Now, Sky Sports pundit Michael Dawson agreed that the verdict was harsh. He said: “It is so soft! It’s not a foul for me…”
He then added: “The goalkeeper has dropped it! It went straight through his hands…”

Aston Villa simply need more luck to end winless run
While Aston Villa have not helped themselves, much of their recent poor form has been down to bad luck or poor individual decisions.
Against Club Brugge, Tyrone Mings conceded a baffling penalty that ultimately cost the visitors.
From here, multiple stars picked up injuries over the international break, further limiting Emery’s options.
Now, just as the club were showing signs of returning to form, VAR snatched a victory away at the death.
Surely, Villa’s luck has to come good sooner rather than later or it could be a long festive period.
