Liverpool, Real, BVB, Amdouni: So lief die Champions League

Liverpool FC continued its impressive winning streak in the Champions League and also disenchanted defending champions Real Madrid. Coach Arne Slot’s team defeated the Spaniards 2-0 on matchday 5 of the league phase, thus underlining their current top form. Argentine world champion Alexis Mac Allister (52nd minute) and substitute Cody Gakpo (76th) scored the goals.

Both teams also missed a penalty. Real star Kylian Mbappé missed the equalizer after just over an hour and was denied by Liverpool goalie Caoimhin Kelleher. On the other side, Mohamed Salah (70th) shot a penalty to the left of the goal.

With an impeccable record of five wins, Liverpool remain confidently at the top of the table and can slowly but surely plan for the round of 16. Real, on the other hand, are stuck with six points and are in danger of losing sight of direct qualification for the round of 16, four points behind eighth place. Real are currently only in 24th place and would therefore just be in the second round.

Benfica turns the game around late, Dortmund wins confidently

AS Monaco, who lost their home game against Benfica Lisbon 2-3, missed out on second place. The Monegasques with the Swiss Breel Embolo (up to 63′) and Captain Denis Zakaria (up to 91′) took the lead despite being outnumbered in the 67th minute through Soungoutou Magassa, but substitute Arthur Cabral (84′), the ex-Basel player, and Zeki Amdouni (88th) ensured the late turnaround in favor of the Portuguese. Both scored with a header, each from a cross from Angel Di María.

Borussia Dortmund is well on its way to qualifying directly for the round of 16. BVB won 3-0 at Dinamo Zagreb. Coach Nuri Sahin’s team, with Gregor Kobel in goal, celebrated their fourth win of the current campaign. Jamie Gittens in the 41st minute, Ramy Bensebaini (56th) and Serhou Guirassy (90th) secured the away win with their goals.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa missed out on another prestigious success. The team from Birmingham, which had already beaten Bayern Munich, drew 0-0 with Juventus.

Eindhoven manages to catch up furiously, Stuttgart goes under

Thanks to a memorable comeback in the final phase, PSV Eindhoven celebrated an important victory in the fight for the second round. Coach Peter Bosz’s team turned 0-2 into 3-2 at home against Shakhtar Donetsk with three late goals from Malik Tillman (87th, 90th) and Ricardo Pepi (90th + 5). Donetsk professional Pedrinho (69th) was sent off early for serious foul play.

VfB Stuttgart had no chance at Red Star Belgrade. The Bundesliga club missed its second win and has to worry about qualifying for the next round. He lost 1:5 to the previously pointless champions from Serbia. Ermedin Demirovic (5th minute) gave VfB (from 46th with Fabian Rieder) an early lead. But Silas (12th), who was loaned to Belgrade by the Swabians, and Rade Krunic (31st), turned the game around for Red Star before the break. The goals from Mirko Ivanic (65th) and Nemanja Radonjic (69th/88th) sealed Stuttgart’s clear defeat.

VfB had to do without some of its expected 2,400 fans at the game. They had turned around in their buses on the way to Belgrade and driven back to Stuttgart – according to media reports, because of disproportionately strict police controls at the Serbian border.
