WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – There’s the potential for heavy lake effect snowfall this weekend in parts of the North Country.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from Friday afternoon through Monday morning in Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties.
As many people travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, the NWS says narrow bands of heavy lake effect snow could bring rapidly changing road conditions and visibilities.
The weather service says there’s “considerable uncertainty” as to exactly where these bands of snow will be and how much snow will fall. 7NEWS’ John Kubis agrees and says it’s too soon to know how the winds will blow and take this snow. (He’ll update us on the 6pm news tonight.)
The NWS has issued winter storm watches for other areas of the state including western and central New York this weekend.
Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday encouraged New Yorkers to stay alert, monitor the forecast and be cautious while traveling.
“We are preparing to deploy additional snow removal equipment and personnel, utility crews, and have put the National Guard on standby. If you are traveling, please plan ahead, and prioritize your safety and the safety of others to ensure we can all spend this holiday with our loved ones — safely and warmly,” she said in a prepared statement.
