Between January and September, the Port of Funchal received 383,928 passengers in transit, the vast majority (90.1%) of which were Europeans. The predominant nationalities were British (44.6% of the total; +23.5% than in the same period in 2023) and German (37.0%; +0.6%). It should also be noted that passengers from the American continent in transit through the Port of Funchal (8.8% of the total) decreased by 24.6% compared to the same period in 2023. The nationalities that most contributed to this drop were North Americans ( 6.9% of the total; -1.4% than in the same period in 2023), the Canadian (1.4%; -16.4%) and the Brazilian (0.3%; -89.5%).

On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers was around 316.9 thousand between January and September 2024, decreasing 3.1% compared to the first nine months of 2023. The number of passengers recorded on that line (171 .7 thousand), in the 3rd quarter of 2024, decreased by 0.6% in the annual comparison.

The variation in the movement of goods at the Region’s ports, between January and September 2024, was slightly positive compared to the same period of the previous year (+0.7%). The equally slight increases observed in the unloading of goods (+0.8%) and in the loading of goods (+0.1%) contributed to this variation. It should be noted that, in the 3rd quarter of 2024, the year-on-year increase in total movement of goods was +10.2%.

From January to September 2024, 1,556 recreational vessels entered the Region’s marinas, with 3,572 crew and passengers. In the 3rd quarter of 2024, these two indicators corresponded, respectively, to 688 vessels and 1,592 crew and passengers.
